Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
